“Nymphomaniac” director Lars near Trier has Parkinson’s

The Danish star director Lars von Trier stands for idiosyncratic films and all kinds of scandals. He has now been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

This was first reported by the Danish broadcaster DR, which in turn refers to Trier’s production company Zentropa. Accordingly, the 66-year-old is “in good shape” even after the examinations. He has already started treatment. Work on the third season of the cult mystery series “Ghosts” will continue according to the shooting schedule. His film successes include works such as “Idiot”, “Antichrist” and “Melancholia”.

In 2011 he was banned from the Cannes Film Festival in France for accusing himself of being a Nazi. This ban from the Croisette was lifted seven years later.

“Ghosts: Exodus” should follow the 90s success

The sequel to “Ghosts”, a series about a haunted hospital, is an affair of the heart for von Trier. In the 1990s he wrote international television history with the legendary material.

But very few had it easy with the eccentric: From Trier, the singer Björk drove into pure desperation during the shooting of the film “Dancer in the Dark”, but she still won the Golden Palm in Cannes with her in the leading role. His international breakthrough came in 1996 with the drama Breaking the Waves.

Parkinson’s is a slowly progressing disease whose symptoms can initially be treated. It kills cells in the brain that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine. Disturbances in the motor process occur, which cause the typical trembling of the limbs.
