Nyck de Vries ahead of Monza debut

Nyck de Vries will make his Formula 1 debut at the Italian Grand Prix. This is made possible by a short-term change in Williams’ cockpit. The racing team confirmed the swap shortly before the 3rd practice session.

Alexander Albon will not have another race weekend in Monza, as Williams announced on Twitter on Saturday afternoon. According to the team, the Thai complained of being unwell in the morning, after which he went into the hands of the local doctors.

After the first examinations it is clear: Albon is being treated for appendicitis. “Alex is in good spirits and the team wish him a speedy recovery,” Williams tweeted.

Dutchman Nyck de Vries will now take his place. The 2021 Formula E champion should have been a logical choice, as the reserve driver is already at the racetrack anyway.

He completed the first free practice session for Aston Martin on Friday, sitting in Sebastian Vettel’s car. In the end, a 19th place jumped out.

For de Vries it is now important to get used to another Formula 1 car as quickly as possible.

The third practice session (2:00 p.m.) and qualifying (5:00 p.m.) are scheduled for Saturday.
