Holstein Kiel had to cope with a setback in the promotion race on matchday 11 of the 2nd Bundesliga against 1. FC Nürnberg. After the 2-0 win, the “club” now sees itself in the role of pursuer.
After their third win from the last four games, Nuremberg climbed to eighth place with 18 points and moved within one point of fourth-placed Kiel. KSV Holstein missed the possible jump to second place.
“It was an even game until 0-1, then the goal was scored“, analyzed Kiel’s coach Marcel Rapp after the game on ARD radio. “Then it was difficult against a well-organized opponent. The boys tried everything and left everything on the pitch, but it wasn’t enough today.“
His counterpart Cristian Fiel praised his team: “We found the rooms we wanted to use. At times we lacked determination towards the goal, but overall I can be happy today.“
Craftsmen and Uzun ensure Nuremberg’s victory
Tim Handwerker gave Nuremberg the lead in a long, tough game in front of 12,000 spectators (68th minute), his shot from the edge of the penalty area deflected unstoppable by Colin-Noah Kleine-Bekel to Kiel keeper Timon Weiner. Can Uzun made the preliminary decision with his counterattack goal (77th).

It was a game of equals from the start. Neither team was able to gain an advantage before the break – even with the big chances: On the Kiel side, Lewis Holtby missed the possible lead, on the “Club” side it was Handwerker. Otherwise there were hardly any gaps, although Nuremberg recorded more deals.
Even after the change, the game initially remained balanced and very competitive. Many duels took place in midfield, but highlights remained in short supply for a long time – until Handwerker broke the deadlock with his somewhat lucky opening goal. Uzun followed up coldly on a counterattack.
Both teams challenged in the cup
Both teams continue in the second round of the DFB Cup on Wednesday: Kiel meets 1. FC Magdeburg, Nuremberg faces league rivals Hansa Rostock.
The 2nd Bundesliga continues next matchday for the “Club” against FC Schalke 04 (Saturday, November 4th, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.). Holstein Kiel is also required in Osnabrück.
