Nuremberg defeats Rostock

After catching up thanks to a super joker like last year, 1. FC Nürnberg is in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.

In a nerve-wracking second division duel, the four-time cup winners defeated Hansa Rostock 3:2 (2:2, 0:0) after extra time. The match winner was substitute Felix Lohkemper, who first saved the club from elimination with a last-minute goal (90th + 5th) and then shot to victory (99th). The 17-year-old Can Uzun missed a penalty shortly before the end (120.+1).

Junior Brumaro (58th) and Christian Kinsombi (75th) had put Hansa in the lead twice with maximum efficiency, but were otherwise clearly inferior to the Nuremberg team apart from the thrilling final phase. The strong Kanji Okunuki scored the equalizer to make it 1-1 (63′). Last season the club was the only second division team to reach the quarter-finals.

Nuremberg had more of the game throughout the entire game, combined forward nicely, but only rarely managed to get dangerous shots. By the break, the Franks had already earned ten corners, but there was not more than one header from Okunuki into the side netting (37′).

The club was not discouraged by the goals conceded. First Okunuki rewarded himself for his strong performance – then coach Christian Fiel showed a golden touch when making substitutions.
