The number of women and girls murdered in 2022 has risen to the highest level in two decades. The United Nations reports this.
About 89,000 women and girls were deliberately killed last year, according to UN Women and UNODC, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. “The alarming number of femicides reminds us that humanity continues to struggle with deep-seated inequalities and violence against women and girls,” the UNODC said in a statement.
“Every life lost is a call to action, a plea to urgently address structural inequalities and improve the criminal justice approach so that no woman or girl has to fear for her life because of her gender,” it added. .
More than half of the murders, about 55 percent, were committed by family members or partners. This means that an average of 133 women or girls were killed every day by someone from their own family.
The highest number of murders of women and girls, about 20,000, occurred in Africa, followed by Asia (18,400) and the Americas (7,900). In absolute figures, the fewest women were murdered in Europe (2,300) and Oceania (200).
