Number of births in Flanders in 2021 again higher than number of deaths | News

In 2021 there were slightly more births than deaths in Flanders. This is again linked to the situation before the corona year 2020. This is evident from data from Statistics Flanders on Wednesday.

Last year, 65,747 children were born in the Flemish region: 33,528 boys and 32,219 girls. That is almost 3,000 more children than in 2020 and about 2,000 more compared to 2019.

Births thus again exceed the number of deaths. In 2021, 64,508 deaths were registered in Flanders.

This positive “natural balance” is very common in Flanders. In the past two decades, more deaths than births were recorded only in the corona year 2020. The number of deaths then exceptionally peaked to 70,919 (compared to 62,798 births in 2020).

The number of deaths in Flanders did decrease in 2021, but it is still more than 2,000 more than in the pre-corona year 2019, according to the figures from Statistics Flanders.
