Number of asylum seekers in Ter Apel registration center again below maximum of 2000

The number of people in the registration center in Ter Apel also remained below the agreed maximum number of 2,000 last night. 1,942 people stayed in the registration center that night, reports a spokesperson for the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA).

This makes it the second night in a row that the COA did not exceed the maximum number of 2,000 and therefore does not have to pay a penalty.

Since Thursday, a maximum of 2,000 asylum seekers have been allowed to stay at the location in Ter Apel. If COA is unable to stay below this number, it must pay a penalty of 15,000 euros per day to the municipality of Westerwolde. This amount can amount to a maximum of 1.5 million euros. The maximum number of asylum seekers was exceeded during the first two nights, meaning the penalty had to be paid twice.

The night from Friday to Saturday was the first time that the COA remained below the set limit.
