Number 1 in the world Barty announces goodbye to professional tennis | Sport

,,I no longer have the physical drive, the emotional hunger and everything it takes to challenge yourself at a top level. I’m ready,” Barty said in an interview on the WTA professional website. “It’s my first time saying it out loud and it’s hard to say. But I’m happy and I’m so ready,” she told former doubles partner Casey Dellaqua.

“I know in my heart that’s the right thing to do. I am so grateful for everything tennis has given me. It has fulfilled all my dreams and more. But I know this is the right time for me to say goodbye, put down my rackets and pursue other dreams.” It is not yet known what Barty will focus on.

Barty won her first grand slam singles title at Roland Garros in Paris in 2019. Last year she won the Australian Wimbledon and early this year she won the Australian Open. She won the doubles title at the US Open in 2018 with the American Coco Vandeweghe.

The Australian reached the first place in the world ranking on June 24, 2019. She is currently leading the WTA ranking since autumn 2019. In total, she has been number 1 for 121 weeks.
