Residents on Kerklaan and Prins Bernhardlaan in Nieuw-Buinen experience a lot of nuisance due to a colony of rooks, protected songbirds that can make a lot of noise. The municipality is therefore coming up with a relocation plan for the birds.
Freddy de Bruin does not know exactly how many birds are involved. He is chairman of the Association for Village Interests in Nieuw-Buinen. ”But the animals cause a lot of nuisance. They mainly make a lot of noise and mess.” The interest group says it has received several complaints from residents about the animals. “Moreover, it is not the first time that the rooks have caused a nuisance here,” he says.
The persistent problem with the birds is also known to the municipality of Borger-Odoorn, De Bruin knows. ”We understand that the municipality wants to tackle this problem properly soon. Attempts are being made to move the rooks and to prune the tall trees where the birds are now living. It is not entirely certain where exactly the rooks will go. “That may be the Nieuw-Buinen industrial estate, a little further away.”
The municipality has announced that it plans to inform residents about the action plan soon. There is a so-called ‘roek management plan’ and an exemption has been granted by the province of Drenthe to actually implement this plan, on a trial basis. The municipality wants to explain how and what during an information evening next Tuesday.
