In a rare way, Queen Margaret highlighted family relationships in her New Year’s speech.
Queen Margaret of Denmark, 82, made a radical decision in September and removed the Royal Titles from his four grandchildren. The change concerns Margareta’s younger son, the prince Joachim’sdescendants.
Joachim has four children: Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10.

The title change took effect at the turn of the year. Joachim’s children are now only called by the names of Count or Countess of Monpezat. In the future, they will also not be referred to as Royal Highnesses, but as Excellencies.
The change does not affect the order of succession to the crown. Prince Joachim is currently sixth in line to the crown and his children follow him in order of age.

The removal of the titles caused resentment.
Joachim’s ex-wife and mother of the two eldest sons, Countess Alexandra, among others recently expressed his shock. According to him, the children cannot understand why they are rejected in this way.
Joachim, on the other hand, commented:
– I have to tell my children that their identity will be taken away. I’m really, really sad to see them so sad and clueless about this.
– My children are sad. My children don’t know what to believe. Why should their identity be tampered with? Why must my children be punished?
The queen herself opened up about her decision a little later:
– I have made my decision as a queen, mother and grandmother. But as a mother and grandmother, I underestimated how much my decision would affect my younger son and his family. The decision has big consequences and I am sorry for them, the queen stated in her comment published on the official Instagram account of the Danish court.
– There is no doubt that my children and grandchildren would be my great joy and pride. I hope that we as a family can find harmony in this situation, the queen continued.
Now Nikolai is speaking
Just before the titles were officially removed from the children, the eldest, Nikolai, finally opened his verbal coffin and told what he thinks about the situation:
– All of this has been associated with conflicting thoughts and feelings, which I would rather have been without.
– But things are as they are now. For the rest of my life, I will be proud of the years I got to be the prince of Denmark, Nikolai summed up.
The Queen’s handshake
Margareeta also brought up family relationships in her traditional New Year’s speech.
– I think of my family with great love. Any family has difficulties and differences of opinion, including mine. The whole country has witnessed them, the queen said.
He also stated that for Prince Joachim and his wife, Princess To Mariethe resulting resentment has made him sad.
– I have had time to think about things and I see the coming year as bright, Margareeta summed up.

Royal Expert Jacob Heinel find this very noteworthy.
– He made a public handshake for Joachim and Marie, under the eyes of all of Denmark. It is quite unusual, Heinel analysed.
In time, Denmark will be ruled by Margareta’s first-born son, Crown Prince Frederik.
Frederik and the Crown Princess Mary’s have four children together. Only the eldest of them, the prince Christian17, is entitled to an annual allowance paid by the state after reaching the age of majority.
