Derry John Murkin continues his career at Schalke 04. With the German tradition club, the left back signed a contract until the summer of 2026. In total, Murkin played 97 times for the first team and was nine times accurate.
In recent years, Derry John Murkin could always count on a basic place in the Volendam main force. The self-trained player made his debut in April 2019 and took the left back position after the departure of Gijs Smal to FC Twente.
On the FC Volendam site, technical director Jasper van Leeuwen says that he has mixed feelings about Murkin’s departure. “We will certainly miss Derry, because he is an undeniable strongholder that we could always build on. But we also see the other side of the football medal: Derry now has a great opportunity to show his qualities in a different football culture, with a real tradition club and in a fantastic stadium.”
All in all, this is another major downer for FC Volendam, because important pillars such as Gaetano Oristanio, Filip Stankovic, Francesco Antonucci, Henk Veerman, Florent Sanchezal and Daryl van Mieghem already left earlier. In addition, there is unrest among the eel farmers because of the arbitration case with captain Carel Eiting. The New Orange did attract South African international Luke Le Roux last week.
Former AZ player Thomas Ouwejan also plays at Schalke 04. Just like Murkin, the Heilooër is also a left back. The club from Gelsenkirchen can use reinforcement, because last season Schalke 04 relegated to the second bundesliga. And at the moment those Königsblauen are in fifteenth place after four matches.
If FC Volendam wants to strengthen it even more, it doesn’t have much time. The transfer window closes Friday night. The home game against FC Twente is scheduled for this weekend.
