Nottingham Forest loanee Djed Spence leaves future open

“Boro” demands a high fee

“It was one of the best performances from a right-back I’ve seen in a long time. (…) A player at this level should play in the Premier League,” Arsenal legend Ian Wright commented on Djed Spence’s appearance in early January, who surprisingly kicked the Gunners out of the FA Cup with Nottingham Forest. Five months later, that wish will become a reality with the rise of the ‘Tricky Trees’ – assuming Nottingham can retain the loanee from second division side Middlesborough. Spence announced during the promotion party that he wanted to stay.

After beating Huddersfield 1-0 in the promotion playoffs, the right footer let it be known that his future was open but that he would “hopefully” continue to play for Forest beyond the summer. “The club means everything to me. (…) I came here and both the fans and the coach welcomed me well. (…) We lose together and win together. We rise together. (…) I would like to stay, but it’s not in my hands,” the right-back said in the “Nottingham Postquoted.

Spence had been linked with several top European clubs in the spring, including Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and FC Bayern Munich, where he was traded as a possible backup on the right defensive winger. Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford FC in particular are said to remain interested in the U21 international’s services.

Vote for Premier League Player of the Season now

His home club Middlesborough FC will play a key role in the youngster’s future. Born in London, he switched from Fulham to the U23 “Boros” in 2018, two years later he made the leap to the professionals. After a mixed season in 2020/21, the club loaned the right-footed player to Nottingham last summer via a “deal sheet” on Deadline Day, where Spence has been a regular since then – he made eight goals in 46 games. At “Boro”, who finished the championship seventh in the table, his contract runs until 2024.

The pain threshold of the English second division club in terms of transfer fee should be around 18 million euros, it was said recently. The sum would make the 21-year-old the club’s second most expensive exit after current Barça pro Adama Traoré (26), who left Middlesborough for Wolverhampton for €20m in the 2018/19 season.
