A dog trader in Deurne is not allowed to care for dogs for six months. He is also not allowed to bring dogs to any address. The economic judge in Zwolle has determined this on Friday. According to the judge, this measure must take effect immediately, because the health of dogs and puppies cared for by the man is at risk.
The man has been in regular contact with the police and the judiciary for almost six years because he neglects his dogs. Animals have also been confiscated from him on several occasions. In May he tried to hide 118 of his dogs, because he expected a check. The police discovered the animals and called in the National Animal Protection Inspectorate (LID). The animals were eventually all found and taken away.
In April, 25 neglected dogs were picked up at the dog breeder in Deurne. They had matted fur, mange mite infections and neglected teeth, the inspection service announced. A month earlier there were 21 dogs.
‘Improvement is not forthcoming’
According to the judge, it has always been shown that the animals were in bad shape and that despite warnings there was no improvement. He wants to prevent even more dogs from falling victim to the breeder from Deurne, because the man cannot handle the responsibility.
According to his lawyer, his client has shown improvement after each check. According to him, it is not for nothing that the probation service report shows that the man has a great love for his dogs. But that is precisely the problem: according to the judge, he does not blame himself. In addition, a vet has stated that the man is unable to recognize problems in his dogs and get them treated properly.
‘Prefer prison’
The probation service estimates the likelihood of recurrence to be high and even recommends a ban on keeping animals for ten years. The man from Deurne, who obtained the professional competence diploma in March, has already announced that he would rather go to prison than not be allowed to keep dogs for a while. He does not emphasize that he cannot live without animals and does not want to put breeding out of his mind.
The man is seen as a bread breeder. That means he breeds the dogs to make money. He has had bread breeding farms before, including in Veldhoven. He was already subject to procedures at previous locations, after which he then disappeared to start again in another municipality.
