A small German film fairy tale with a rather serious subject: The German World War II drama “Nothing New in the West” based on the great novel of the same name by Erich-Maria Remrque won seven awards at the British Academy of Film and Film Awards in London on Sunday (February 19). Television Arts (BAFTA). There were prizes in the categories “Best Film” and “Best Director”.
The prize for the best non-English language film also went to Germany. Composer Hauschka was honored for his film music. “Nothing New in the West” was nominated a sensational 14 times for the renowned film award in Great Britain. So far, no German film has managed to do that.
In his acceptance speech, director Edward Berger explained that his daughter Matilda convinced him to do the film after studying the book at school.
In the Oscar season, the BAFTA awards are also considered a barometer for possible Academy Awards. When the coveted gold statues are awarded in three weeks, the film, which was co-produced and can be seen by Netflix, will have nine nominations. As of this weekend, the possibility continues to rise that he could also scoop prizes in Los Angeles.
