“Not even the slightest bit”: Disarstar raises its voice for the homeless

The Hamburg rapper Disarstar posted a video on Instagram on Sunday (October 16) in which he advocates better conditions for homeless people in Germany and underscores his words with a special campaign.

Specifically, Disarstar is filmed dismantling several metal poles on a public wall in Hamburg. According to assumptions, the metal bars dismantled by the rapper were originally installed with the aim of preventing homeless people in particular from resting or spending the night on the wall. After removing the metal rods, the rapper prepares a bed with a blanket, pillow and flower vase on the wall that has been freed up. Finally, he spray-painted the words “Not even the slightest bit” on the wall of his art scenario. The video is accompanied by a self-written text that the rapper recites.

In the video, the Hamburger would like to draw attention to inequalities and abuses

In it, Disarstar parodies, among other things, the supposedly privileged thinking of some people: “‘In Germany, nobody has to be homeless,’ the enlightened neo-liberals like to say at champagne breakfast. However, the life crisis of homelessness can affect almost everyone. There is no right to an apartment in Germany, and those who cannot pay their rent end up on the streets. Without an apartment it is difficult to find work and without work it is difficult to find an apartment (…).”

The rapper continues: “I have lived in St. Pauli for over ten years and only during this time have I observed the massive investor and tourist-friendly expansion of the city center, which is giving the homeless less and less space. (…) The homeless, who, according to neoliberal ideology, are solely to blame for their situation, disturb the urban idyll. (…)”

#hostilearchitecture and #defensivedesign – reactions on social media

Some musicians and public figures, including Micha Fritz, Tristan Brusch, Alex Barbian, MINE and Lina Maly, commented on Disarstar’s action on Instagram with supporting smileys and endorsements.

GoBanyo, a non-profit organization that works for unconditional access to sanitary facilities, also comments on the post with the hashtag “#feinearchitektur”. She writes: “#hostilearchitecture is state-ordered violence against people who have to survive on the streets. Thank you for taking a stand against this violence. And thank you for saying what many of us no longer dare to say. For fear of losing our charitable status. #itsatrap”

Disarstar himself comments on his post with the hashtag “#defensivedesign”.

Disarstar calls for prosperity for all

Again and again Disarstar addresses social injustice, class society, neo-liberalism and capitalism. A call for donations for the Hamburg “CaFée mit Herz” appears in the credits of the video for his campaign. The initiative distributes food, clothing and drinks to the needy every day. It also supports the homeless with shower stalls, medical care and social counseling.
