What do you do as a car manufacturer when the world is screaming for your cars and you want them to reach your customers as quickly and cheaply as possible? You have your own ship built.
This is what Chinese BYD has done, the company that defeated Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric cars in the last quarter of 2023. BYD makes more attractively priced electric cars, is now the largest car brand in China and is seeing exports to Europe and the US rise.
In January, the BYD Explorer 1, a ship that can transport 7,700 cars, was delivered. A roll on roll off carrier that’s what it’s called, cars can drive on and off at the quays.
The first flight, with an estimated 5,000 cars, departed directly from Shenzen with destination Vlissingen. The ship arrived in the Sloehaven on Wednesday morning.
BYD has ordered seven more of these ships. They sail on LNG to limit the environmental and climate impact.
