And actually, the skating queen hasn’t changed a bit in the past 19 years…
About Ireen Wust
‘Our’ skating heroine Irene Karlijn (Ireen) Wüst saw the light of day on April 1, 1986 in Goirle. The now 35-year-old speed demon took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics for the first time. As a 19-year-old ‘guppie’ she won gold in the 3000 meters and bronze in the 1500 meters in Turin. With those performances, she was the youngest Dutch Olympic champion ever at the Winter Games.
Braces and big dreams
Broadcasting Brabant shared nice images of the first interview with Wüst ever years ago. A good moment to bring the video up again. The then 16-year-old Ireen still had braces, trained herself by accident and was in 5 VWO. And her great ambitions were already fine then. “I want to try to reach the highest possible level. One day I hope to be able to compete with the top of the world. And to go to the Olympics, of course.”
Six gold, five silver and a bronze Olympic medal richer, she can now call herself the most successful Dutch participant in the Games ever. What a power woman!
