Not a drop of water for the Tesla factory

Wasserchef puts 16 mayors under pressure: no more new houses and companies. The association would lack exactly those 1.8 million cubic meters per year that Tesla was promised.

A week before the planned Tesla launch, the water utility WSE is threatening to terminate the supply contract for the car factory. In addition, WSE boss André Bähler (54) puts his 16 member communities and the state of Brandenburg under pressure.

On Thursday, the WSE will hold an extraordinary association meeting. Then the community representatives should decide on the termination of the water contract with Tesla. “Partial termination is also an option,” said association chief Bähler on Tuesday.

He had previously put the pistol to the head of the 16 mayors. Bähler wrote to the town hall bosses that the WSE can no longer approve new residential or commercial projects. You can’t build without them.

Bähler’s reason: lack of water. The permitted production volumes were not sufficient to supply the population and Tesla. The association would lack exactly those 1.8 million cubic meters per year that Tesla was promised.

The WSE demands from the State Environment Agency: By Thursday, it should issue a toleration for 3.8 million cubic meters for the Eggersdorf waterworks. So far there are only 2.5 million. The Potsdam Ministry of the Environment is outraged: Because of the permitted 14.5 million cubic meters, the WSE has so far only used 10 to 11 per year. Bähler counters: “We need a reserve for drought and extinguishing water.”

On Wednesday, Brandenburg’s state chancellery wants to mediate a conversation between the ministry and the water association. Time is of the essence: Next Tuesday, Tesla boss Elon Musk (50) will fly to the opening ceremony.
