STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – From paper rolls to car batteries: Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt is buying the Kvarnsveden paper factory site from Stora Enso in Borlnge, Sweden, and plans to convert it into another gigafactory by 2024.
Batteries with a peak output of more than 100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of cathode material should be able to be built there each year. “This is the first time that we are reusing an entire production site,” said Northvolt boss Peter Carlsson on Friday. The new factory, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2024, will play a key role in working off the order backlog, which is worth around $50 billion.
Northvolt manufactures lithium-ion batteries for electric cars and energy storage. The largest shareholder of the start-up company founded in 2016 is the Wolfsburg carmaker Volkswagen.
At the beginning of February, Northvolt published plans for a joint battery factory in Gothenburg with the car manufacturer Volvo. With the “Gigafactory” in Skelleftea, Sweden, which went into operation at the end of December, Northvolt became the first European manufacturer to develop and produce a battery cell in Europe. The company plays an important role in plans to make Europe less dependent on battery suppliers from Asia.
