The Northern Netherlands ended this spring weekend on a colorful note. The northern lights were clearly visible in several places in Drenthe and in the other northern provinces.
The northern lights could be admired from mid-evening in Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen, among others. Hans Bruls captured the natural beauty in Sleen. The northern lights have also been spotted in Aalden, the Onlanden and at the Kibbelkoele near Kibbelveen.
The northern lights or polar lights are caused by eruptions on the sun. This releases large quantities of charged particles into space. Due to the Earth’s gravitational pull, these particles are mainly drawn to the north and south poles, because that is where the Earth’s magnetic field is strongest.
The charged particles travel through the atmosphere at high speed and collide with each other. This releases energy, resulting in the beautiful play of colors in the sky.
See below how the Northern Lights could be seen in Drenthe.
