In the province of the same name that borders North Korea and Russia, two people died on Friday from Covid-19, the first death in China in more than a year. The country has been able to keep the virus at bay for a long time, but the number of outbreaks is increasing due to the highly contagious omikron variant. China reported 4,053 new infections on Sunday, two thirds of which in Jilin.
Changchun, the capital of Jilin province, has already gone into lockdown. In that city of 9 million inhabitants, the measures have been tightened again. Only medical personnel and others who have to go outside because of the epidemic are allowed to leave their homes. Since March 11, residents have been allowed to go outside once every two days to buy food.
Eight temporary hospitals and two quarantine centers have been built in Jilin province to contain the outbreak. Millions of people are also in lockdown in cities elsewhere in the country.
