North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has threatened again that his government could use nuclear weapons “preemptively” to defend itself against enemy forces, North Korean state media reported.
According to the North Korean state news agency KCNA, Kim Jong-un has told senior military officers that “to maintain the absolute superiority of the North Korean armed forces” the country must be able to “preventively and thoroughly stop all dangerous attempts and threatening movements.” to hold back and frustrate, if necessary.” He says Pyongyang must continue to expand its arsenal so that no one can challenge North Korea, calling it “the lifeline to ensure the security of our country”.
During a military parade Monday to mark the 90th anniversary of the Korean People’s Army, Kim Jong-un said North Korea will accelerate its nuclear weapons program. “The republic’s nuclear power must be ready to carry out its mission of unique deterrence at any time,” Kim said at the time. “If any military forces try to penetrate our nation’s fundamental interests, our nuclear forces will be forced to unexpectedly launch a second mission.”
New nuclear weapons were also displayed during the parade, according to South Korean sources, including the Hwasong-17, the largest intercontinental ballistic missile known to North Korea.
