North Korea fires three anti-aircraft missiles shortly after Biden leaves Asia | NOW

North Korea fired three ballistic missiles on Wednesday, South Korea’s military says. That happened hours after US President Joe Biden left the region.

Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol set plans over the weekend for larger joint military exercises. They also agreed to deploy more US strategic weapons if necessary in response to North Korea’s growing number of military exercises.

South Korea’s military command said the three surface-to-air missiles were fired from Sunan district in North Korea’s capital Pyongyang in less than an hour.

The Japanese Coast Guard reported at least two launches. According to the Japanese broadcaster NHK the missiles ended up outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

It was Biden’s first visit to Asia as president. US and South Korean authorities had warned that North Korea, which has nuclear weapons, appeared ready to test weapons.
