North Korea fires ballistic missile towards Sea of Japan | Abroad

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan. The South Korean army announced this on Sunday.

“The North has fired one or more unidentified ballistic missiles toward the East Sea (the Korean name for the Sea of Japan, ed.),” South Korea’s General Staff said in a statement. No further details were provided.

The UN Security Council bans North Korea from conducting ballistic missile tests, but Pyongyang argues that these tests are part of its sovereign right to self-defense. Depending on the type, such missiles can be equipped with nuclear warheads.

Result of warning

The missile launch follows a warning from South Korea and the United States that any nuclear attack on South Korea or the US would lead to the end of the regime in Pyongyang. The two countries took part in the second session of the Nuclear Consultative Group in Washington on Friday, a consultative body that sets out a strategy against the nuclear threat from North Korea.

In November, North Korea successfully launched a spy satellite that Kim Jong Un’s regime claims is capable of providing images of U.S. and South Korean military sites.
