North Holland’s queen of ice stops

31-year-old Irene Schouten from Hoogkarspel is putting an end to her skating career. She is a three-time Olympic champion. “I have achieved what I wanted,” she told ANP.

The top skater says that thanks to her successful performances at the Olympic Games and many world titles, she can look back on a ‘super wonderful and successful career’. “I have achieved what I wanted. Only winning the Eleven Cities Tour is still missing from my list,” Schouten said. “After the Olympic year I realized that it would be difficult to immediately commit to a new four-year Olympic cycle.”

World Championship distances

Schouten has just finished the World Championship distances in the Canadian city of Calgary. She has won several times there: three golds (on the 3000 meters, team pursuit and mass start) and once silver on the 5000 meters.
