It is still sweltering hot and how we deal with it everyone in North Holland does in his or her own way. Our reporters were present throughout the province and covered this tropical day.
The Noorderlandhuis care institution in Hoogkarspel tackled the heat this day with ice cream and foot baths. “The activity guidance always knows how to make something positive out of it,” says spokesperson Els Harder of WilgaerdenLeekerweideGroep. The institution pulled out a heat protocol: water jugs were set up and counselors handed out cold washcloths.
Innovation cool snacks for the animals
In zoo Landgoed Hoenderdaell in Anna Paulowna, the animals are also suffering from the heat. They withdraw into the shadows and do nothing all day, caretaker Daphne Pels observes. To help the animals cool down, they are given cold treats. The zookeepers specialize in coming up with innovative cool snacks for the animals.
For example, the monkeys get fruit that is frozen in water, some birds get frozen watermelon and the lions get blood ice creams. The blood of the meat that lions eat is then stored in a bucket after which it is frozen. “Not fun to make”, says Daphne, “but the lions love it.”
Cows cool off in the shower
In Zwaagdijk-East the cows are cooled in their own way. Dairy farmer Jacob-Jan Wiering had renovated his barn a few years ago. “I now have a nebulizer on with spring water”, he tells NH Nieuws. “It keeps the stable at around 12 degrees. The fan pushes the cold air through the stable again.”
Some people thought it was too hot to work today. For example, the Dikke Mik eatery in Enkhuizen remained closed. “Because of the heat, there is no workable situation,” reports the pub. And the football match between Telstar and Spakenburg has been postponed by a day due to the high temperatures.
A little extra
Where one stopped his work, the other found a way to earn a little extra from the warm weather. Skipper Gillian, for example, took advantage of the open bridges in Haarlem. The heat causes the iron of bridges to expand and that damages the bridge when it is down.
To reach the other side without taking a detour, Gillian brought people to the other side. He did that for only two euros per person. A fun side job that helps people.
And Luuk from Haarlem also saw a business model in the tropical weather. Together with his father, he fights the heat by spraying passers-by with a water pistol. Father Rolf has a small water gun in his hand and Luuk a large one.
It is up to the passers-by to choose which of the two they want. But for a good shower you have to contribute a bit.
