This year, the province and the North Holland municipalities must jointly ensure that more than 16,000 asylum seekers can be accommodated. This was announced by the outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum Affairs).
The distribution was announced in the context of the distribution law, which was adopted in the Senate last week after much discussion and will come into effect tomorrow. By passing this law, the government can ultimately force municipalities to receive asylum seekers.
For the time being, the time has not yet come: this coercion is not expected to be used for a few years.
Structurally too little
North Holland is one of the provinces that has structurally received too few asylum seekers for years. A large number of municipalities has not even received asylum seekers at all for years.
According to an initial calculation of RTL News There are a number of municipalities where significant scaling up will be required. For example, Amsterdam must provide a total of 4,459 reception places, and 139 asylum seekers must be accommodated in the wealthy Bloemendaal.
