Noord-Holland is not the safest province for cyclists, especially in Heemstede and Zandvoort it is dangerous. Comparison site Independer put together figures from Rijkswaterstaat and our province did not come out well there: we are the second most unsafe cycling province in the country.
From a national perspective, North Holland is one of the most dangerous provinces for cycling: only in South Holland were more accidents with bicycles in 2020. 5.9 people in Noord-Holland had an accident with their bicycle or e-bike per 10,000 inhabitants. In South Holland there are 6.5 accidents per 10,000 inhabitants.
What should you watch out for the most? There were 8.7 bicycle accidents per 10,000 inhabitants in Zandvoort, just like in Heemstede. Alkmaar is just below this with 8.6 bicycle accidents per 10,000 inhabitants. That is significantly higher than the provincial average.

Independer’s research, which is based on figures from Rijkswaterstaat from 2020, shows that 1 in 10 bicycle accidents involves an electric bicycle. People are injured more often in accidents with an electric bicycle: 54.1 percent versus 44.3 percent with a regular bicycle.
