North Holland and IJmond municipalities want more environmental measures from Tata

The province and the three IJmond municipalities of Beverwijk, Heemskerk and Velsen want Tata Steel to take more environmental measures and not just adhere to the legal minimum. This must be included in the customized agreements that the steel company makes with the government, the province says.

The province and the three municipalities have established a new program for Tata Steel. This runs from 2024 to 2030. The authorities want to reduce the negative effects of Tata Steel on the health and safety of local residents as much as possible.

The program states that more and better research must be done. The research data must also be easier to view.

Furthermore, the province and municipalities want to communicate better with residents. For example, confidence in the government must be improved. According to the province, that confidence is low because Tata Steel’s emissions cause health damage, but the company often remains within the legal framework in terms of emissions. This is difficult to explain to local residents, says the province.
