Cross-country skier Pia Fink caused a little surprise at the Nordic World Ski Championships. When the American Jessie Diggings won the 10 km, the 27-year-old finished in the top ten.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica, the German cross-country skiers could not keep up with the competition when it came to awarding the medal. At the top there was a long-distance duel between Jessie Diggins and Frida Karlsson. But shortly before the end, the American ignited the turbo and gained a lead of 14 seconds over the Swede and was able to celebrate gold. Bronze went to Karlsson’s compatriot Ebba Andersson (+19.5 sec).

Fink in the top ten

From a German point of view, Pia Fink caused a surprise. Her best place over this distance in this discipline was 19th this year. Fink divided the race well and was getting faster and faster at the end. At the finish she was 53.2 seconds behind the world champion. With seventh place, she achieved the best result of her career. “The race was good, I felt good,” said Fink in the ZDF interview.

Hennig loses time

Katharina Hennig, who had skipped the sprint competitions, approached the race cautiously and divided her strength. But after 4.5 kilometers they were already 26.2 seconds behind. It quickly became clear that a medal would not come of it. In the end she was eleventh (+1:01.2). In December she ran the 10 km freestyle in Lillehammer, Norway, in second place – although she favors the classic style. Victoria Carl followed in 14th place, Sofie Krehl finished in 31st place.
