On the way to the World Cup, Germany’s ski jumper must handle setbacks. After the weak performance on the four -hill tour, there is also a lull at the second highlight of the season.
It was not the World Cup general rehearsal that the German ski jumpers had hoped for. At the last World Cup in front of the World Cup in Japan, Pius Paschke, Andreas Wellinger and Co. collected a crashing bankruptcy. Paschke landed in the first of two jumps as the best of the DSV eagle in 23rd place. For the first time in 14 years, no German ended up in a World Cup jumping among the top 20th. -achieve result.
Paschke: From a high flight to the dive
The drop in performance in Paschke seems particularly blatant. Bayer started the season brilliantly. In November and December it was: if Paschke jumps, Paschke wins. He had won five jumping before the four -hill tour. He started the first of the two season highlights as the top favorite.
But just as the big competitions, Paschke weakened and then fully crashed in terms of performance: on the tour of the sixth, from the beginning of January then a break: Paschke had even even left the World Cup in Lake Placid to insert a short training block in Planica. The 34-year-old does not seem to have found back on the November and December form- at least at short notice.
Paschke and Wellinger speak of “real direction”
After his 23rd place on Saturday, he said it “In the right direction” go. “The hit rate is not yet so good. But I notice that the jumps feel a bit more like at the beginning of the winter”. The next day he missed the second round as 31st.
Since mid-December and 15 competitions, the DSV eagles have been waiting for a podium-such a long dry spell was last in winter 2007/08. In addition to Paschke and Wellinger, Stephan Leyhe and Felix Hoffmann also disappointed.
Criticism of national coach Horngacher
The shape low comes to a very bad time. Before the World Cup, the criticism of the national coach will also be Lauter. Discussions about Stefan Horngacher, who succeeded Werner Schuster in 2019, but already swept off the table DSV sports director Horst Hüttel. “There would be a risk in a change, so for us it is not the topic”he said.
In front of the World Cup, the ski jumpers now want to recharge your batteries: “Now it’s going home, then next week will be free of competition”said Wellinger about the timetable. “We will go to training a bit, prepare for the World Cup and probably rest and motivate.”
Kobayashi succeeded – can DSV eagle add?
After his ninth place on Sunday, Wellinger spoke in the same wording as Pius Paschke from the “Right direction”. The Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi impressively showed how quickly the direction of ski jumping can turn: the three-time four-hill tour touring winner already had big problems this season.
Until his home game, he never made it onto the podium. He then won both in Japan. Perhaps the DSV eagles in Norway will succeed in a similar U-turn.
