Nordic Combined: Riiber with historic victory

Nordic combined athlete Jarl Magnus Riiber has regained the yellow jersey with one race to go before the end of the season and is on course for his fourth overall World Cup triumph.

The 24-year-old Norwegian won in Schonach after a jump from the normal hill and a ten-kilometre run, and with his 48th success he equaled the combined victory record of Finn Hannu Manninen.

For Riiber, who is now in the lead with 1283 points, it was the fourth consecutive victory. His long-time rival Johannes Lamparter from Austria finished second and is now one point behind going into the grand final.

The overall winner of this winter will be decided in Schonach on Sunday. Riiber, who is in top form and who missed several races before the Winter Games in Beijing and then didn’t win a medal at the highlight of the season due to a corona infection, is going into the last race as the clear favorite. Along with Riiber and Lamparter, Joergen Graabak from Norway completed the podium on Saturday.

Since Vinzenz Geiger’s individual Olympic victory in Beijing, the German team has had nothing to do with the victories.

This time, from the team of head coach Hermann Weinbuch, only Geiger finished fourth and Eric Frenzel tenth in the top ten. Local hero Fabian Rießle is missing because of a positive corona test.
