Nooralotta Neziri turns 30 – her mother’s cerebral palsy changed everything

The thirty-year-old hurdler Nooralotta Neziri plans to continue her career for two or three seasons.

– Many times people are stressed about whether they can say they are over 30 years old. You can really say.

That’s what the 30-year-old will announce on Wednesday Nooralotta Neziri.

– I feel that I’m quite young, and I don’t have any crisis in my thirties. It’s been quite a multi-stage life up to now and I’ve experienced quite a lot in my thirties. Especially in my sports career, I have experienced a lot, the hurdler describes.

Fresh experience is a somewhat surprising coaching relationship Matti Vyyryläinen73, with.

– After my surgery at the end of the summer, I decided that it’s not worth going abroad. I’m in Helsinki at least every other week with a physiotherapist, so I need Finland.

A year ago, Neziri entered into a coaching relationship with the Austrian by Philipp Unfried with and spent a lot of time in the alpine country. The duo’s cooperation left a strong indoor season in 2022 under the line, but the outdoor track season already ended in June. At the end of the summer, the bone lump pressing on the left Achilles tendon was operated.

– I met Mati by chance when I needed a limb correction. At the first meeting, we discussed these things.

The athlete, who moved from Jyväskylä to his old hometown Pori, left a good taste for wrestling.

– The second time I asked Mati if he could jelp me and come watch the exercises. Then the conversation deepened and it was decided on greater cooperation.

Vyyryläinen is a sprinter who created a national career in the Kouvola region in the 1970s. In the last millennium, he worked in the Sports Association as a sports coach. The man’s main job has been limb repair. Konkari can often see from a person’s standing position if something physical is wrong.

– Above all, Mati’s technical thinking impressed me. We agree that I am reasonably strong and fast, but the technique is exhausting. We saw the technical problems and their solutions as similar.

Meter in red

Neziri moved to Jyväskylä in 2017, when the intense coaching relationship became fanatical Jussi Ihamäki ended with

Controversial in sports circles, Ihamäki must be credited with creating strong foundations for his former protégé. In the mid-2010s, Neziri would have set nationally strong times even at 400 meters.

In the 2016 season, the person from Pori, who ran the SE and still valid personal record of 12.81, drifted into overfit five years ago due to training that was too hard and skimped on recovery. The coach shifted the responsibility for what happened to the athlete.

– The whole body collapsed. It hit really differently than the injuries. They always have a prognosis, but then the doctors said let’s see.

Neziri has described himself as a quick person who accelerates quickly from zero to one hundred. When the meter was in the red, it was impossible to continue the coaching cooperation.

– I don’t want to stir up the issue, and I don’t see it as fruitful in any way, commented Neziri.

– I can say that I am not a long-tempered person. I saw him recently in the Karhu hall in Pori and we exchanged information, the godfather of Ihamäki’s child continues.

Experienced sprint coach living in Jyväskylä Petteri Jouste turned Neziri’s career curve upward again.

Master of Arts

In Central Finland, Neziri graduated with a master’s degree in economics, majoring in management.

Since childhood, the athlete’s home had emphasized the importance of a final academic degree. Neziri was primarily interested in psychology, but the cooperation with Nike, the equipment partner of the 2010s, changed his plans. The Finn became interested in the marketing of sports brands.

– Studying has always been meaningful, and never super difficult. Now that you think that I have a master’s degree in economics, it feels really great. On the other hand, I have always felt that it is a side story.

Budget discipline

Impatient, lively and talkative.

That’s how Neziri could be described.

– My industry is fast-paced, where you have to react really smartly. Marketing requires that you keep up with trends, styles and customs, says the quick-witted.

– Management requires patience. When I think about the last two years, which have been spent mainly with injuries, I find a certain perseverance and tolerance of adversity. I don’t get discouraged if I hear the answer “no”, he continues.

The business scientist doesn’t budget her expenses in Excel, but is a “woman of the exact mark”.

– I’ve thought about a certain budget in my head, for example, for a trip. I get nervous if more money is spent. For a while, the feeling is ruined.

Spouse as masseuse

Neziri returned to Pori with the idea that it will remain his home for years to come. At least as long as the sports career continues for the next 2–3 seasons.

In Central Finland, Austria and Satakunta, the food group has included the betrothed. A man who works as a butcher has been responsible for his spouse’s massage for several years.

How do you maintain the balance of your relationship when your spouse is so strongly present in your profession?

– It’s complicated, because the life of an athlete is such that the same things happen at work and at leisure. You should know how to separate them, but we haven’t completely succeeded. The only way I can get away from sports is to do something completely different. For example, updating social media is one art.

Turning point

Neziri is gradually recovering from the surgery at the end of the summer to full training condition. So far, training has been even more rehabilitative. ATTE KAJOVA

The biggest turning point in Nezir’s life happened in 1999, when he was 7 years old. The family that won FIM 10,000 in the lottery headed to the Swedish ship, but on the drive from Pori to Turku, the father at the wheel had a deer crash.

The three children in the back seat escaped practically unscathed and the father with a broken nose, but the mother sitting in the front seat suffered a serious brain injury in the accident.

– You could think of the event very negatively, and of course I don’t wish the same for anyone, but if I think positively, it has made it possible for me to become such a good athlete.

Neziri is purposeful and responsible. They are valuable character traits for a professional athlete.

In everyday life, Arje’s sense of responsibility was visible right after the deer accident, when she took care of her younger siblings.

– Maybe taking care of the siblings is an unnecessarily sharp word when, in addition to my father, luckily the grandparents were there. When you were the oldest child, taking responsibility for others was natural. My siblings were 3-4 years old at the time of the accident, so almost babies.

How is your mother?

– Considering the starting points after the accident, really good. My mother is in the shape of her life and I am on my way to the best shape of my sports life after this leg injury.
