At the proposal of Minister Bruins Slot of Foreign Affairs and Minister Weerwind for Legal Protection, the Council of Ministers has approved the nomination of Prof. Herke Kranenborg as judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The Netherlands has been asked to nominate a candidate judge who can be appointed with effect from October 7, 2024, for a period of six years. The term of office of the current Dutch judge in the EU Court, Prof. Sacha Prechal, will then end.
Herke Kranenborg is a member of the Legal Service of the European Commission and professor of European Data Protection and Privacy Law at Maastricht University.
The selection of a candidate judge takes place through a public application procedure with the involvement of an independent recommendation committee, chaired by the President of the Supreme Court.
The Member States of the European Union decide on the appointment by consensus. They do this after (positive) advice from a committee consisting of judges of the highest national courts, former judges of the EU Court and skilled legal scholars.
The Court of Justice of the European Union is the highest judicial body of the EU and consists of 27 judges, one per EU member state. The Court has the final say on the interpretation and validity of EU law.
