It can be seen on a map from 1788, the Emmermeer. Opinions differ about how big it was: from six to forty hectares. But it disappeared without a trace, says historical researcher Johan Withaar from Emmen. He immersed himself in the history of the district, which was once a lake.
Withaar shows a detailed map of Emmen from 1788, showing the Emmermeer to the northwest. He pulls out another card: “This one is from 1829. And the nice thing about this card is that you can see that a stream goes to the lake from the higher ground. So that means that the Emmermeer was fed by water from the es”, explains Withaar.
