No World Cup exclusion for Ecuador: FIFA rejects appeal over Castillo

Ecuador does not have to fear an exclusion from the World Cup in Qatar for the time being. The FIFA Appeals Committee has dismissed the appeal of the football associations of Chile and Peru. The two associations had complained that full-back Byron Castillo had been used in the World Cup qualifiers with false identity papers and was therefore not eligible to play.

The World Association rejected this and confirmed the decision of the Disciplinary Committee. This had come to the conclusion “that the player has permanent citizenship of Ecuador in accordance with Art. 5 Para. 1 of the implementing provisions of the FIFA Statutes.” This means that Ecuador can play the opening game against hosts Qatar on November 20 as planned. Chile, which might have moved up, could still appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS.
