Mainz professional Kohr fails on the post
The best chance up to that point was missed by Mainz’s Dominik Kohr, whose header landed on the post from eight yards out and then in the arms of VfB keeper Müller (55′).
The Mainzers stayed on the trigger. Substitute 05 professional Marcus Ingvartsen got his free kick stuck in the VfB wall, his powerful follow-up shot went wide of the right post (72′).
The hosts remained the more active team until the final whistle, but like VfB they were unable to get a lucky punch. VfB slipped to 16th relegation place after Hertha BSC won in Augsburg. Mainz are in ninth place.
“In the first half we didn’t show what we wanted,” said 05 professional Jonathan Burkardt in an ARD interview. “In the second half we were overweight and had a pretty good chance of winning the game in the end.”
