No white, but especially wet Christmas this year: ‘Lots of rain tomorrow evening’

Every year you hope against your better judgment for a white Christmas, although that almost never happens in the Netherlands. It’s not possible again this year. In fact, it will be a wet Christmas.

“You only have that white Christmas at an altitude of ten kilometers,” jokes RTV Drenthe weatherman Hans Nienhuis. “Tomorrow it will still be quite dry in the morning, but cloudy at around 11 degrees with a moderate westerly wind. That will change in the afternoon.”

During the afternoon there will be a disturbance in Drenthe, which will later become more intense. “It gets really soaking wet, especially in the evening. So pay close attention if you go on the road in the evening, because up to 10 millimeters of rain can fall.”

According to weatherman Nienhuis, Boxing Day is going slightly better. “There will still be occasional showers, but we will certainly see the sun,” he expects. “It will be around 9 to 10 degrees, with a weak to moderate southwest wind. It is mainly the afternoon that we have to cling to.”

Because after Christmas the weather becomes a lot less. From Wednesday a new disturbance will occur over the province. “It’s going to rain and blow,” says Nienhuis. “The air is also becoming softer and that means there can be a lot of moisture in it. So it will be wet and gloomy again.”

Nienhuis has even ventured to make a very cautious forecast for New Year’s Eve. “It looks like it will be a little cooler, about 5 degrees. It will also be a bit drier. It is still a bit vague, but it certainly seems to be less wet than the first days after Christmas.”
