Chancellor Scholz has rejected his French counterpart. He continues to rule out the use of ground troops from EU and NATO countries.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has clearly rejected French President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to send Western troops to Ukraine. It will also apply to the future that “there will be no ground troops, no soldiers on Ukrainian soil that will be sent there by European states or NATO states,” said Scholz on Tuesday during a visit to Freiburg.
“It is important to keep reassuring yourself of this and the fact that this has taken place as an understanding is, in my view, a very, very good and very important step forward,” added Scholz.
The evening before, at the end of a Ukraine conference in Paris, Macron said that sending Western troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out. Scholz also praised the fact that there is now finally a willingness to buy ammunition for Ukraine outside Europe with EU money. France had previously rejected this.
