No running water in Grave prison for days due to leakage

The prison in Grave has been awake without running since Tuesday evening. That evening, employees of the House of Detention discovered a leaking water pipe, from which water flowed to the work rooms and the warehouse. The mains had to be shut off, which means that there is no water from the tap, toilets cannot be flushed and showers cannot be taken.

The prison management has arranged that there is water to flush the toilets and that prisoners can wash themselves. Staff and detainees receive bottles of drinking water.

‘annoying, but also lover power’
After the main line was closed, the leak was traced. The cause of the leak is still unknown. Several parties have been engaged to resolve the issue.

Deputy director Patricia van Etteger: “We spoke to the detainees and explained the situation. It’s annoying, but also force majeure. They understand that we are doing what we can to fix it.”
