No Rest for the Wicked is more Dark Souls than Diablo

The new game from the creators of Ori, No Rest for the Wicked, comes out much stronger from the latest round of previews: here’s everything we know.

Moon Studios, the developer behind the acclaimed Ori, is bringing a new take on the action RPG genre with No Rest for the Wicked. The game, until now, has remained shrouded in mystery but, after an in-depth overview of the gameplay and the world, it has been confirmed that No Rest for the Wicked will be released very soon.

However, there is a substantial caveat. Unlike the two Ori, Moon Studios’ next title will be released in early access, growing thanks to direct player feedback.

It may look like a normal isometric dungeon crawler with a different art direction, but No Rest for the Wicked plays very differently from the genre it seems to belong to. Don’t let the overhead view fool you: the game features an animation-based combat system and a soft class system. Combat is an essential part of the game and will become increasingly complex with a variety of mechanics until the endgame.

More Dark Souls than Diablo —

The Wicked Inside showcase revealed much more about the game’s world, combat, settlements, and other gameplay elements. Unlike Moon Studios’ previous production, Wicked will be published by Private Division, so it won’t be an Xbox console exclusive.

Wicked’s combat is “precision-based,” meaning that the placement and physical stats of weapons, such as their weight, will play an important role in this dynamic. Set in the year 841, you take on the role of a Cerim, a member of an ancient sect whose goal is to drive out the Pestilence, a plague that is taking over the kingdom.

Once the showcase was over, many sites published their first impressions of the game resulting from preview sessions, but the most common opinion is clear: it looks like a Diablo clone, but it plays a lot like From Software’s titles.

“We’ve always dreamed of being able to contribute to the ARPG genre that we all grew up with and love. After the success of Ori, it became clear to us that Moon was now mature enough to finally realize these dreams,” said Thomas Mahler, co-founder and creative director of Moon Studios. “We can’t wait to see how players react to this completely new take on the genre!”
