No reconstruction of N65 for the time being: Vught is taking temporary measures

Temporary measures must be taken as soon as possible to make the dangerous N65 between Haaren and Vught safer. The Vught city council came to this conclusion on Thursday evening. There is also a plan for structural adjustments to make the road safer. But it will take years before it can be implemented, partly due to the nitrogen problems. The council now wants to try to tackle the problems with temporary measures.

There are approximately four accidents per month on the N65, an average of 25 red lights are run every day, and all intersections in Vught and Helvoirt are difficult to cross and unsafe.

It is therefore clear that something has to be done. And there was a plan for that: the level intersections must disappear and the road must be deepened in various places. Above this there will be roundabouts where traffic can cross the road. There should also be a fast cycle route and a parallel road.

Nitrogen emissions
It would be a major redesign of the current N65. But it cannot be implemented because the nitrogen emissions in the plans are too high. The plans were therefore thrown out by the Council of State at the end of 2022.

Nevertheless, eight of the nine parties in the Vught municipal council refuse to make a new plan: they want to stick with the rejected plan. Because, they say, we can make new plans, but the question is whether the problems of nitrogen emissions can be solved in any new plans.

In the meantime, doing nothing is not an option, according to almost all parties. Temporary measures must be taken as soon as possible to make the road safer now.

Temporary measures
But these temporary measures should not get in the way of the future plan for the reconstruction of the N65. Consider, for example, reducing the speed to fifty kilometers per hour within built-up areas, constructing parallel roads and installing roadside protection.

The council has asked the council to present an action plan before the end of this year.
