Deposit hunters in Coevorden will soon no longer have to dig through trash cans in search of bottles and cans. The municipality wants to introduce a so-called donation ring for packaging that has a deposit.
A motion for such a system in Coevorden received support from all parties in the municipal council on Tuesday evening. “People will soon no longer have to turn upside down in the trash can to get the deposit out,” said councilor Jan Tempels of BBC2014. “The donation ring offers less wealthy people the opportunity to collect bottles and cans for deposits in a dignified manner.”
Also in Assen and Groningen
Many larger cities in the Netherlands have now introduced can and bottle holders at waste bins. This usually involves a plastic or metal bracket on the rubbish bin, where the packaging can be used. In the North, Assen and Groningen preceded Coevorden. In Germany, where there has been a deposit on cans for some time, the donation ring has been a great success, according to Coevorder parties.
The Netherlands has had a deposit on cans since April 1 this year. The extra 15 euro cents that a drink costs as a result will be refunded when the empty can is returned. The deposit system for small plastic bottles of soft drinks and water came into effect on July 1, 2021. Especially in the beginning, before the introduction of the donation ring, municipalities had trouble with deposit hunters who broke open trash cans and threw garbage on the street.
Larger villages
Coevorden wants to ask artists to think about the design of the ring. Tempels: “Something with geese would of course be good for Coevorden.” Not only waste bins in the city itself are in the picture, such as along walking routes in the city center and around the EDS square. Implementation in larger villages within the municipality is also being considered.
The system should also lead to less litter. That is also a problem in Coevorden. On Wednesday, around 1,400 students will go out to clean up litter. The campaign ‘Clean Coevorden in 1 day’ starts in the morning at CBS De Schutse in Aalden.
