No news at the front

★★★ Yes, yes, the battle scenes. Terrible, bombastic, perfectly immersive. They make us feel (more or less) firsthand the horrors of war. But, come to think of it, that mountain of special effects reminiscent of the trailers for Saving Private Ryan and, more recently, to 1917wear what should actually be an anti-war plea.

It is on paper: drama-wise, we’re waiting for the shots. It’s not bad but it’s not quite right when it ends up giving the impression that the horror of war is transformed into a spectacle.

For those who once criticized the end of the adaptation that I made of the same book in the thirties lewis milestonethis new version is something like “morbotaining”. But it’s not his fault: much of the cinema based on true events (especially if they are bloody) has become that.
