No new corona restrictions in England for Christmas | Abroad

There will be no new corona restrictions in England before Christmas. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said this in a video posted on social media on Tuesday, according to Sky News.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not issue new corona restrictions before Christmas due to the advancing omikron variant.

The British can go ahead with their Christmas plans, Johnson said on Tuesday after numerous speculations that the United Kingdom might go into lockdown. He cautioned, however.

“We don’t think there is enough evidence to take tougher action before Christmas,” Johnson said in a video shared via social media. “We are closely monitoring the situation around omikron and if it deteriorates, we will take action if necessary.”

He didn’t want to rule out tougher interventions after Christmas. However, Johnson pointed to the uncertainties surrounding the seriousness of the new corona variant and the consequences for healthcare; reasons why he doesn’t want to intervene yet.

Minister Rishi Sunak (Finance) is also demanding more information about the possible consequences before taking a decision that he believes will damage the economy again. Sunak pledged as much as £1 billion (1.17 billion euros) to sectors that are already partially affected, such as tourism, hospitality and cultural institutions.
