No new coffee shop in Tilburg, youth center is too close

There will be no new coffee shop on Verdiplein in Tilburg, the municipality of Tilburg will announce this on Tuesday evening. The municipality overlooked a nearby youth room in a community center, which turns out to be too close to the intended coffee shop. “It is extremely unfortunate that this has happened. For the entrepreneur involved and for the environment,” said Mayor Theo Weterings.

The municipality says it made a mistake: “The criterion ‘the distance to youth centers’ has been overlooked.” It concerns the De Ypelaer community center.

The mayor informed the entrepreneur who would operate the coffee shop on Tuesday. The mayor also had a meeting with people in the neighborhood on Tuesday evening. They too have been informed that there will be no coffee shop.

The municipality is now marking time and will also review other locations. A debate with the city council will follow on Monday 26 June.

Petition against coffee shop
At the beginning of June, the notary, together with the mayor, drew lots for the two places where a coffee shop is allowed. Verdiplein in Tilburg-Noord and Koningsoord, the new center of Berkel-Enschot, ended at the top.

Mayor Theo Weterings already indicated at the time that it was not yet certain that the coffee shops would really come to these places. There was still research to be done. “It may be that an entrepreneur does not meet all the requirements. Then we move on to the next one on the list,” said Weterings shortly after the announcement of the two places.

In Berkel-Enschot, the neighborhood rioted when it became known that there might be a coffee shop in shopping center Het Koningsoord. Local residents started a petition, which has now been signed more than 4300 times.
