No more self-deleting messages on WhatsApp Desktop

Messenger WhatsApp is always working on new functions. Rarely does it happen that features are removed again. So it is now, however, the self-deleting messages.

The messenger service WhatsApp, which now belongs to Meta, is one of the most popular communication channels in the world. Normally, the service continues to expand its range of functions – for example, you can now completely hide your online status. With WhatsApp Desktop, however, a feature that is actually popular is disappearing: the self-deleting messages. That’s behind it.

WhatsApp no longer shows self-deleting messages in desktop app

One or the other WhatsApp desktop user may have already noticed it. Since the beginning of November 2022, the self-deleting messages can no longer be seen or sent in the version for larger screens.

In future, anyone who receives a self-deleting message from a WhatsApp user by phone can only read it on a mobile device. Only a corresponding notification can then be seen in the desktop app.

That’s why WhatsApp is removing the feature

In the beta info WhatsApp explains its step. As a result, the removal of self-deleting messages is also related to the recently released screenshot blocking. This prohibits taking screenshots of the self-deleting messages, the purpose of which is to disappear again after a certain time. However, the blockade only applies to smartphones – a corresponding function cannot be implemented on a laptop or PC.

That’s why the company decided to completely disable the feature for the desktop app for privacy reasons. WhatsApp also points out the possibility that the so-called one-time messages could simply be photographed from the desktop. Users should be aware of this danger and handle the content of such messages with appropriate care.
