No more cycling on the escalator: this is how we will soon cross the A12 at the Mandela Bridge

A typical Zoetermeer scene will disappear in a few years: crossing the A12 by bicycle on the escalator of the Mandela Bridge. Good news for many people, because not everyone dares or is able to use the escalator and, in addition, the escalators and lifts are regularly defective.

In all those years, most cyclists have become very skillful in positioning their bicycles stably on the escalator. By placing your bicycle wheel transversely on the step you can get to the top of the bridge fairly quickly. But not for everyone this way to do or safe. In a few years they will be able to use the cyclist bridge at the station.

More than thirteen million extra

With the arrival of the new Entree residential area, the station area will also be changed. The plans include a station hall, bus platform, bicycle shed and new cycle paths. In addition to its own investment, the government will receive an extra thirteen million euros from the government to create a good bicycle connection between Rokkeveen and Driemanspolder at Zoetermeer station. The new cycle route then goes from the Afrikaweg, over the A12 and the railway, to the Rokkeveen district.

This means that cyclists no longer have to use the elevators and escalators to get to the other side of the city. Mopeds also have the opportunity to make the crossing. Exactly how the route will connect to the existing network is not yet known.

New bicycle shed with special stairs

A new, covered bicycle shed is also planned on top of the station building. You can reach it from street level, and from the roof of the station building, via a circular bicycle staircase. SKN Bouw has made a test model of the staircase that can be tested on Saturday 26 November between 2 and 5 pm. This is possible at Club Entree at Boerhaavelaan 33.
