No more cheers! Beer is getting scarce in Mallorca

No more cheers! That doesn’t exist: beer is getting scarce on Mallorca. And that’s not all: supermarket shelves across Spain are emptying.

Among other things, milk, yoghurt, fruit – and beer are missing. Some food factories have already had to close due to bottlenecks in the supply of raw materials.

With regard to its Spanish factories, beer brewer Heineken is concerned that not only supermarkets but also the tourism industry could soon be left dry and that beer in hotels, restaurants and bars would become scarce.

The truck drivers’ strike began on Monday last week and has recently intensified with blockades of motorways, inner cities, wholesale markets and ports. There is already a drastic supply crisis in Spain.

For the Balearic Islands, which are heavily dependent on tourism, the supply bottlenecks shortly before Easter after two years of significant sales losses due to the pandemic would be tantamount to a catastrophe.

The food company Danone warned of a production standstill in its Spanish plants. The VW plant in Pamplona had to temporarily suspend production due to a lack of supplier parts.
