Feels “of course not good”
Alexander Sebald played 59 games in two seasons as number one for SV Rödinghausen. He caused a sensation last December with his headed goal in injury time to win a point against the then league leaders Wuppertaler SV (1-1) on the 20th matchday of the Regionalliga West. The keeper was even nominated by the “Sportschau” for “Goal of the Month”. However, the decision not to extend his expiring contract has bitter consequences for the 25-year-old at the end of the season.
Since Sebald announced his departure to those responsible, he has been condemned to watching on the bench. “A few weeks ago, shortly before the cup game, I decided not to extend my contract in Rödinghausen because I want to take the next step. The club then decided to give Leon Tigges, who was the cup goalkeeper, the chance to play and gain security for the cup,” explains Sebald in an interview with Transfermarkt, but he also describes the club’s actions as “completely legitimate and understandable”.
The goalkeeper, who came to the then regional league champions on a free transfer from FC Hansa Rostock in the summer of 2020, drew attention to himself with good performances at SV Rödinghausen. In 59 games, Sebald had to get behind him 55 times and in 21 games he kept a clean sheet. “I think the stats always read well for a goalkeeper when you’ve played more games than you conceded goals. In our league in particular, that’s not something you see every day, especially consistently over such a long period of time,” says Sebald.
Having to sit on the bench now “of course doesn’t feel good” for an ambitious athlete like him, admits Sebald. “But I still put myself at the service of the team and continue to give it my all, because that’s just my nature.” How and where things will continue in the coming season is still open. “I just want to take the next step now, preferably of course move up a league. I’ve also had the dream of playing in the first or second division abroad for a long time,” says Sebald, who was able to gain his first experience outside of Germany in the 2017/18 season with the Austrian second division club SC Austria Lustenau.
